Who needs the Gap? The GOP Is Selling T-shirts

Washington Law & Politics, October 1, 2001

Forget Al Gore’s beard. Washington state Republicans have a more striking fashion statement: the Gary Locke T-shirt. The party started selling the shirts after the state Legislature failed to cobble together a traffic plan during the fourth special-session stretch. Sporting the slogan “Gary Locke, the do-nothing governor” on the front and a help-wanted ad for a new governor on the back, these all-cotton tees are sure to be a hit with over-heated commuters. The shirts cost $10. Order them from the Republican party’s Web site, www.wsrp.org, and it will throw in a free anti-Locke bumper sticker.

“The Republicans, of course, have been out of power so long…they will go to any length to embarrass this governor,” says Washington State Democratic Party Chair Paul Berendt about the GOP merchandise. He points to the Republican House leadership as the real culprit: “Clyde Ballard is the one who’s gummed up the machinery in Olympia, not our governor.” So far, however, the Dems have no plans to hawk Ballard-bashing merchandise. Though “Visualize Clyde Ballard” would make a great bumper sticker.
